Key Points

  • Given its current market cap of $50 billion, Solana will need to soar 20x to reach a market cap of $1 trillion.
  • To hit this goal, Solana will likely need to topple Ethereum as the top Layer-1 blockchain network.
  • Solana will also need to ramp up the pace of institutional adoption in decentralized finance (DeFi).

Bitcoin remains the only cryptocurrency that has ever hit a $1 trillion market cap. Today, Bitcoin has a market cap of $1.6 trillion, roughly on par with Tesla's or Meta Platforms'.

While a number of cryptocurrencies have been talked about as potential entrants to the $1 trillion club, the one I have my eye on right now is Solana (SOL -5.46%). Here's why.

From $50 billion to $1 trillion?

Right now, Solana has a market cap of $54 billion. For the sake of argument, let's call this $50 billion. So, for Solana to become a $1 trillion digital asset, it would need to increase in value by roughly 20x. Given Solana's current price of $90, that works out to a future price of approximately $1,800.

That's obviously a stretch goal, but it's within the realm of possibility. As a smart contract platform with a highly diversified blockchain ecosystem, Solana has several pathways to a trillion-dollar market cap.

If you assume Solana hits $1 trillion in market cap, you should also expect it to eventually supplant Ethereum (ETH -8.09%) as the top Layer-1 blockchain network. That's how Solana gets to a $300 billion valuation, which is the current value of Ethereum.

From there, Solana needs to continue eating Ethereum's lunch in key areas such as decentralized finance (DeFi), and it needs to keep winning over users and developers with its faster speeds and lower costs.

Beyond that point, Solana will need to more than triple in value, rising from a $300 billion valuation to $1 trillion. This will likely require a wholesale revamp of how investors, users, and developers view Solana. It will need to transform from a blockchain primarily used for trading and speculation in digital assets into one that is part of the global financial infrastructure.

In short, Solana will need to grow up and realize its full potential. It will need banks and financial institutions to use the Solana blockchain to move money and settle transactions. And it will need to remain at the forefront of important fintech trends, including stablecoins and real-world asset tokenization.

How high can Solana go?

The good news is that Solana could go much higher than $1,800 (the price needed to reach a $1 trillion market cap). Back in October 2023, investment firm VanEck outlined an ultra-bull-case scenario, in which Solana eventually hit a price of $3,211. That assumed major market share gains in DeFi, huge growth in institutional adoption, and expansion into new blockchain niches.

Key data points

Just be aware: Investing in Solana is not for the faint of heart. While Solana has had some truly eye-popping years, such as 2023 when it soared in value by 924%, it has also seen some truly horrendous years.

An investment in Solana will not go straight up, and there will be plenty of volatility along the way. But sometime within the next decade, investors could be talking about Solana as the next trillion-dollar cryptocurrency after Bitcoin.
