Mumbai: Blockchain-based stablecoin transfers are gaining traction as an alternative mechanism for cross-border payments, bringing digital-asset infrastructure closer to conventional financial systems. However, their adoption also raises questions around regulatory oversight, transaction transparency and integration with existing banking networks.

The International Monetary Fund’s April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report estimated that gross cross-border flows in the two largest dollar-pegged stablecoins, Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC), increased from $12 billion in the first quarter of 2020 to $316 billion in the first quarter of 2025. The report identified cross-border payments and remittances as emerging use cases, particularly in developing markets, while highlighting associated financial stability and regulatory risks.
