Aave V4 collateral swaps now live on Base, which enables users to switch supplied collateral without having to close a loan. Borrowers and suppliers can now move their collateral seamlessly with the launch of collateral swaps on Aave V4, implemented on Base, Avalanche and Ethereum through Aave Pro.

Powered by the CoW Protocols’ CoWSwap aggregator, Aave V4 converts multiple steps into a single, single-click, intent-based transaction matching every swap with other investors seeking the same trade. A loan holder who supplied ETH and borrowed stablecoins can now rotate into USDC, wrapped bitcoin or any supported asset while their borrow position stays open in Aave V4. The health factor, accrued interest and loan history is maintained, while the exposure to the market shifts in a single transaction.

From Unwinding to One-Click Mobility

Moving collateral on Aave V3 meant settling a debt withdrawing swapping on a DEX, re-supplying and reborrowing. Each step introduced extra gas, increased execution risk, and gave traders longer to extract value at their expense. In V4, that flows into “collateral mobility”. Users provide an intention and CoW Protocol solvers run a batch auction to determine the execution.

Since the swap and position update can be performed atomically with a flash loan, the position can be rotated without leaving the market temporarily. For example, a borrower with decreasing health factor can rotate into a stable, lower-VAR asset to decrease the risk of liquidation, while a borrower with too much margin can rotate into a higher-VAR asset to increase capital efficiency.

Why CoW Protocol and Aave Pro Matter

Execution is managed by CoW Protocol, which counters MEV with its unique solver competition approach, as well as attempting to improve pricing through aggregation and Coincidence of Wants. For Aave, this means avoiding proprietary swap engines and instead plugging the existing intent-based trading layer into lending.

Distribution is through Aave Pro, the platform’s professional and institutional-facing portal, which offers retail borrowers simplified risk management while more sophisticated market players with larger positions, tokenized real-world asset collateral, or treasury management strategies will care more about execution quality, auditability, and friction. This also comes as competitors like Morpho, Spark, Compound, and Euler have all also played on the advantages of isolated markets, capital efficiency, and composability.

What it Means for RWAs, Institutions, and Risk

The real long-term takeaway here is less about convenience and more about the potential of collateral. Aave is focusing on V4 infrastructure for tokenized real-world assets and stock-backed loans, (mainly on Base, where onchain consumer activity and tokenized stocks are rising).

But there are constraints and costs. Not all assets will be available to swap with all other assets; swap prices are subject to liquidity conditions, competitive solvers and the parameters the Aave community establishes.

Large swaps may still face price impact. Switching into a more stable asset profile smooths out volatility but also alters yield, loan-to-value, and liquidation levels. What comes next all depends on popularity and governance. Aave community governance could review usage, risk levels, and proposed expansion to further networks and asset classes.

Developers will be watching whether third-party interfaces make swapping available, whether institutions that use Aave with treasury funds use this feature, and how other protocols respond with comparable functionality. Collateral swaps don’t eliminate the basic hazards of used borrowing. They do alter the speed at which borrowers can respond to the hazards. In a scenario where volatility, tokenized assets and cross-chain activity are rising, that speed might matter as much as price.
