Anchorage Seeks CFTC Swap Dealer Registration
Anchorage Digital has applied to register a new swap dealer with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as the institutional crypto platform looks to bring its growing bitcoin and ether options business under the federal framework used by traditional derivatives dealers.
Anchorage Digital Swap Dealer, LLC submitted the application through the National Futures Association, which is responsible for reviewing swap dealer registrations. The application remains under review, and Anchorage has not provided a timetable for completing the process.
If approved, the entity plans initially to offer European-style options on bitcoin and ether with maturities of up to one year, with additional products potentially following subject to regulatory and internal approvals.
Why Is Anchorage Seeking Swap Dealer Status?
Anchorage said much of the growth in its existing options business has come from public companies holding bitcoin and ether on their balance sheets. Asset managers and investment funds using options to hedge or otherwise manage digital-asset exposure have also contributed to demand.
The company has not disclosed trading volumes or growth figures for the business, limiting the ability to quantify how large its derivatives operation has become.
Registration would place Anchorage Digital Swap Dealer under CFTC requirements covering areas including capital, risk management, margin, trade documentation, reporting and counterparty treatment. The structure would allow institutional clients to trade eligible digital-asset derivatives with a federally regulated swap dealer while continuing to use other Anchorage services such as custody.
That model addresses a broader institutional push toward regulated U.S. derivatives infrastructure. Coinbase expanded global crypto derivatives access for U.S. institutions earlier this year, while other regulated providers have been adding bitcoin and ether options for professional clients.
Investor Takeaway
The application does not yet give Anchorage swap dealer status. The important next milestone is completion of the NFA review, after which Anchorage could combine regulated derivatives dealing more directly with its existing custody and institutional infrastructure.
Why Are Corporate Crypto Treasuries Driving Options Demand?
The role of public companies is notable because corporate bitcoin and ether holdings create risk-management requirements that differ from straightforward long-term custody.
Companies with large digital-asset positions may use options to hedge downside exposure, manage volatility or structure returns around treasury assets without immediately selling the underlying cryptocurrency. Funds and asset managers can use similar instruments to adjust portfolio exposure or protect positions during periods of market volatility.
That creates an institutional derivatives opportunity around the expansion of corporate crypto balance sheets. For Anchorage, those customers can potentially use custody, collateral management and derivatives through related infrastructure instead of splitting those functions among multiple providers.
The competitive market is also expanding. GCEX recently added European-style bitcoin and ether options for professional and institutional customers, while Kraken launched cash-settled BTC and ETH options earlier in 2026.
Investor Takeaway
Corporate crypto holdings are creating a secondary market opportunity beyond custody. The more institutions hold bitcoin and ether as treasury or investment assets, the greater the potential demand for hedging, financing and collateral-management products around those positions.
How Does Atlas Fit Into Anchorage’s Derivatives Push?
Anchorage has been building supporting infrastructure alongside its options business. In March, it expanded its Atlas platform with collateral-management services designed for loans, derivatives and other institutional transactions.
The service includes continuous collateral monitoring, margin calculations and automated workflows around margin calls and collateral movement. Those capabilities become increasingly relevant as Anchorage moves toward operating a regulated derivatives dealer, where collateral and counterparty risk management are core functions.
Anchorage has also expanded beyond custody through acquisitions. In December 2025, the company acquired Securitize For Advisors, adding a wealth-management platform serving registered investment advisers.
Together, the moves show Anchorage building a broader institutional stack spanning custody, trading, settlement, collateral management, wealth management and potentially regulated swap dealing.
What Changes If the Application Is Approved?
Anchorage Digital Bank became the first federally chartered digital-asset bank in 2021 and is regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The proposed swap dealer would add a separate CFTC-regulated entity focused on derivatives.
CEO and co-founder Nathan McCauley said institutions increasingly want a regulated counterparty with familiar documentation, margin processes and reporting standards when trading digital-asset derivatives.
The planned initial product range remains relatively narrow: European-style bitcoin and ether options with maturities of up to one year. Anchorage has said additional instruments could be added later, but has not identified them.
Investor Takeaway
Approval would broaden Anchorage from a federally regulated crypto custody platform into a more complete institutional counterparty for digital-asset derivatives. The commercial test will be whether that regulatory structure converts growing corporate and fund demand into meaningful options volumes and recurring financing activity.
