The recent $6.3 billion Binance hack has raised fresh concerns across the crypto market about exchange security. Although the security incident briefly shook market confidence, Grayscale believes that it could result in enhanced security practices. Grayscale's head of research Zach Pandl says that despite providing a temporary setback, the incident could encourage exchanges to improve safeguards and highlight the importance of institutional custody.
Grayscale sees long-term benefits despite Binance hack
According to Zach Pandl, the recent Binance hack could bring long-term improvements in the crypto industry, especially regarding security. Despite the security breach’s temporary impact on the crypto market and investor confidence, it could force exchanges to strengthen their security measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.
The analyst added that the event could serve as a wake-up call for crypto exchanges. This could push them to improve their security systems and strengthen the way they handle customer funds.
“While it may be a temporary setback for market confidence, we believe it will ultimately result in stronger security practices for all exchanges.”

Unveiling institutional custody benefits
In addition, Grayscale also highlighted the importance of institutional custody. The research head sees it as an important way to protect crypto assets. The firm pointed to the growing interest in exchange-traded products (ETPs), which allow investors to access digital assets while benefiting from professional asset management and custody services.
Notably, ETPs offer an alternative method of holding crypto directly on exchanges. They have several security measures, including separate asset holdings, offline storage, multi-signature wallets, and strict internal controls. Some of them have insurance policies as well. Thus, they provide better protection against possible risks.
Further, the analyst suggested investors contribute their existing crypto holdings to some US-listed ETPs via in-kind transfers. This may help them move their funds to investment products without first selling them for cash. The analyst noted, “It also underscores the importance of institutional custody, such as that offered by US-based crypto [exchange-traded products.” He added,
“We believe that it stresses the importance of institutional custody for crypto assets. In fact, a growing number of US-based investors have been using crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs)—which offer the convenience of institutional custody—to gain exposure to digital assets.”

Crypto market recovers from Binance hack
Here, it is important to mention the impact of the Binance hack. The incident resulted in a loss of about $6.3 billion. However, the exchange has promised to refund the whole loss. Although the FBI blamed North Korean hackers for the attack, Kim Yo Jong dismissed the allegations as “absurd rhetoric.”
Significantly, the Binance hack had a notable impact on the broader crypto market. Immediately after the hack was reported, the Bitcoin price fell below $77k. Binance’s native token, BNB, declined by more than 8% on the same day.
However, the market began showing signs of recovery by Wednesday. This is evident in the overall performance of the market, which rose by about 2% over 24 hours. BTC also surged past $78k, with a more than 1% hike. The BNB token also saw a slight recovery, reaching $698.
