Bitcoin managed to maintain a level above $75,000 on Friday despite a broad sell-off in U.S. tech shares, which triggered significant market turbulence across Asia. The apprehensions stemmed from potential tightening of artificial intelligence (AI) regulations following the recent U.S. midterm elections.
Bitcoin’s Price Movement Amid Market Volatility
On Thursday, the cryptocurrency experienced a decline of as much as 6.6%, briefly touching $75,109 on Bitstamp, before stabilizing near its 50-week moving average, close to $75,733. The sharper dip reflected wider unease affecting technology sectors globally.
Asian Markets React to AI Regulation Fears
South Korea’s stock market notably reacted, with the KOSPI Composite Index plunging over 8% soon after trading opened on Friday, which led to a brief suspension of trading for 20 minutes. Although the index recovered some losses subsequently, it still ended the session down 6%, closing at 5,059.69 points. South Korean regulators responded aggressively by granting a three-month suspension on a 140% margin-loan collateral requirement for brokerages starting Monday, with the intent to curb forced selling and ease volatility.
Impact of U.S. Midterm Elections on Tech and Crypto Markets
Market analysts have linked these fluctuations to concerns that a Democratic-led Congress might enforce stricter AI regulations, potentially affecting major technology companies. Supporting this, key indicators fell sharply on Thursday: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 12.2%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite declined by 4.4% and 5.5% respectively. Despite this sell-off, many experts describe the downturn as driven more by technical trading rather than fundamental changes, emphasizing that a complete ban on AI development in the U.S. remains improbable.
For Pakistani investors and tech enthusiasts, these developments highlight the interconnectedness of global markets and emerging technologies such as AI and cryptocurrency. The volatility underscores the need for careful monitoring of regulatory environments abroad, which can significantly influence market dynamics and investment opportunities at home.
Sabica Tahira, a technology and cryptocurrency content specialist, noted, “The recent market movements are a reflection of broader uncertainty regarding future AI policies in the U.S., which creates ripples across financial markets worldwide.”
