Bitcoin broke back above the $80,000 mark on Wednesday, climbing past $80,600 for a gain of about 4.5% over 24 hours, as a softer dollar, lower Treasury yields and a broad rally in risk assets pulled the cryptocurrency market out of one of its weakest stretches of the year.
Ethereum outpaced the largest token, rising nearly 7% to about $2,435. XRP traded near $1.33, Solana approached $98 and Zcash added more than 12%, extending a run that had already made it the standout performer among major coins a day earlier.
The catalyst came from outside crypto. U.S. midterm election results handed Democrats control of both the House and the Senate, global equities rose, the dollar slipped and the 10-year Treasury yield fell roughly three basis points to 4.92%. A weaker greenback generally loosens global liquidity conditions for dollar-priced risk assets, while lower bond yields make cash and fixed-income holdings less attractive by comparison.
Bitcoin had traded near $78,000 earlier in the session before the move accelerated, according to market data. Reuters reported that the two largest tokens had already begun tracking stocks higher after an initial wobble over the election outcome.
A Relief Rally With Room to Run
The scale of the jump owes as much to positioning as to the political news. Sentiment going into the session was deeply negative after the crypto market shed roughly $300 billion over the past month, weighed down by higher borrowing costs, anxiety about artificial intelligence stocks and the fallout from a massive hack at Binance. Spot Bitcoin ETF flows had also been soft, adding pressure to an already nervous market.
With so much bearish positioning stacked up, Bitcoin's push back through $80,000 likely forced some short sellers to close their bets, and that forced buying can magnify a rebound quickly. The pattern helps explain why higher-beta tokens outperformed. Ethereum's advance of almost 7% dwarfed Bitcoin's 4.5%, and XRP and Solana each gained close to 5%.
Ethereum had been trading just above its 200-day exponential moving average near $2,300 as sentiment improved, and buyers have now pushed it well beyond that level. XRP cleared the $1.30 threshold that traders had flagged as an immediate bullish test when the token was still changing hands near $1.28.
Key Levels and Lingering Risks
The rally does not mean the correction is finished. Bitcoin remains far below its previous record, institutional inflows have been weak and the Binance breach continues to weigh on confidence. Democratic control of Congress could also complicate the path for some crypto-friendly legislation, according to Reuters.
Market participants are watching whether Bitcoin can hold above $80,000, which would make the recovery more convincing. A push toward $82,000 to $83,000 would signal that buyers are doing more than covering shorts, while a quick slide back below $78,000 would suggest the move was little more than a temporary bounce.
Earlier in the week, the market had already shown signs of stabilizing. Bitcoin rose to about $77,700 and Ethereum to roughly $2,290, with XRP near $1.27 and Zcash up 9.7%, as equities recovered alongside semiconductor shares following a selloff tied to concerns about AI infrastructure spending and stretched valuations. Spot Bitcoin and Ethereum funds moved mostly higher with the coins, though Bitcoin ETFs had logged consecutive days of outflows, including $399 million on Monday after $643 million on Friday.

What It Means for Investors
The simultaneous combination of a weaker dollar, falling yields, firmer equities and Bitcoin reclaiming $80,000 gives crypto bulls their first meaningful tailwind in weeks. But the durability of the move hinges on whether the macro backdrop holds and whether institutional flows return. With election-related uncertainty now partly resolved, attention shifts to how the new political landscape shapes fiscal spending, AI regulation and digital asset policy heading into 2027.
