Donald Trump’s crypto businesses could soon face congressional investigations. Following the Democratic Party’s victory in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, lawmakers are preparing to examine the president’s financial ties to digital assets. World Liberty Financial, its USD1 stablecoin and foreign investments are among the main concerns. Reuters previously estimated that four Trump family crypto ventures generated approximately $2.3 billion in profits.

In Brief

  • Democrats are preparing investigations into Trump’s crypto business interests.
  • Reuters estimates the Trump family’s crypto profits at approximately $2.3 billion.
  • World Liberty Financial, USD1 and foreign investment arrangements face renewed scrutiny.

Democrats Turn Their Attention to Trump’s Crypto Businesses

The November 3 elections have changed the balance of power in Washington. Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress, ending Republican dominance of the federal legislature and opening the way for closer scrutiny of the Trump administration.

The president’s cryptocurrency businesses have already attracted criticism. In October, a lawsuit involving Trump, World Liberty Financial and $2.5 billion in disputed crypto deals raised fresh questions about foreign payments and possible conflicts of interest.

Congressional Democrats now expect to gain stronger investigative powers when the new legislature convenes in January 2027.

Committees controlled by the majority party can organize hearings, request financial records and issue subpoenas. Those powers could allow lawmakers to examine transactions that previously attracted questions without producing detailed public investigations.

Representative Robert Garcia, a leading Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has expressed interest in examining the financial activities of the presidential family.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, expected to lead the Senate Banking Committee, has also repeatedly criticized Trump’s involvement in cryptocurrency businesses.

The financial stakes are substantial.

A Reuters investigation published in June estimated that four ventures linked to the Trump family generated approximately $2.3 billion in profits through April 2026.

The businesses include World Liberty Financial, the TRUMP memecoin, American Bitcoin and ALT5 Sigma, now known as AI Financial Corp.

The estimate combines documented financial transactions and calculations based on available disclosures. Some amounts depend on assumptions about token sales. They should not be confused with Donald Trump’s personally verified cash earnings.

World Liberty Financial and USD1 Face Questions

World Liberty Financial is likely to attract considerable attention.

The company, co-founded by members of the Trump family, operates in decentralized finance and issues the USD1 stablecoin. It also sells WLFI governance tokens.

Reuters estimated that World Liberty token sales generated more than $1.4 billion for the Trump family, including revenue from transactions whose precise details were not publicly confirmed.

Foreign investment is another sensitive issue.

A vehicle backed by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates’ national security adviser, agreed to acquire 49% of World Liberty for $500 million.

Another transaction involved MGX, an Abu Dhabi investment firm that invested $2 billion in Binance using USD1.

These deals have already become the subject of a federal lawsuit filed by a Circle shareholder, who alleges that the arrangements improperly benefited Trump-linked businesses.

Circle says it did not authorize the lawsuit. World Liberty Financial denies wrongdoing.

The two transactions have different purposes, and the $2 billion investment in Binance should not be presented as a direct payment to Donald Trump.

Democratic lawmakers are interested in whether business relationships involving foreign investors coincided with government decisions affecting those investors.

The presidential pardon granted to Binance founder Changpeng Zhao in October 2025 has also attracted attention because of the exchange’s commercial relationship with USD1.

No congressional finding has established corruption in these transactions. The White House rejects accusations that the president’s business interests improperly influence government policy.

Crypto Industry Faces a Tougher Congress

The change in congressional leadership could affect the broader cryptocurrency industry.

According to Reuters, crypto-backed political organizations spent roughly $200 million during the midterm election cycle. Some of their most expensive campaigns failed, including an effort to defeat former senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio.

Industry representatives had hoped to secure legislation establishing clearer federal rules for digital assets.

Their immediate priorities may now change.

Bloomberg Government reports that the crypto industry is preparing for congressional investigations and a more difficult policy battle, with considerable lobbying resources potentially redirected toward responding to questions about Trump’s financial relationships.

The CLARITY Act, designed to clarify the respective responsibilities of US financial regulators, remains unresolved after a failed Senate procedural vote in September.

Democrats demanded stronger ethics provisions covering public officials with cryptocurrency interests. Republicans and industry supporters argued that the legislation would improve legal certainty for exchanges, developers and investors.

Any new bill will have to navigate a different congressional majority.

Investigations could begin after committees are reorganized in January 2027. Hearings and document requests may follow, although their scope and timing have not been finalized.

Congressional oversight does not automatically result in criminal charges. Lawmakers can investigate financial relationships without establishing that a law has been broken.

For Trump-linked businesses, however, the coming months could bring demands for information about ownership structures, foreign investors and payments.

The dispute also returns the TRUMP memecoin to the political debate. Cointribune previously examined the substantial losses reported among buyers of Trump’s cryptocurrency. With Democrats preparing to exercise oversight powers, the financial relationship between the White House and the crypto market is set to receive closer examination.
