Crypto news that's actually worth your time.

Weekly. 60 seconds. Carefully curated by our editors: no hype, no promo flood, no spam.

Crypto news this week came in two waves. After Democrats won both chambers of Congress in the US midterm elections, bitcoin jumped above $80,000 on November 4. A day later it fell back below $76,000 as a chip-stock sell-off hit the Nasdaq. The October jobs report on November 6 pushed the odds of a Fed rate hike in December to 76.8%, and US spot bitcoin ETFs lost $1.28 billion in five trading days. As of November 7, 2026, 7:01 p.m. ET, bitcoin trades at $75,780, −2.2% since November 1, and the Crypto Fear and Greed Index reads 28.

Below you will find the week's crypto news as a timeline, prices for the ten largest coins, the key dates for November 9 to 15 and the rest of the month, what the midterms mean for crypto rules in Washington, and what you can do as an investor right now. The week before, with the Binance hack, is covered in our crypto weekly recap for week 44.

Crypto news this week: key takeaways

  • Midterms: Democrats won the House and the Senate on November 3. The CLARITY Act expires on January 3, 2027, without a Senate vote.
  • Bitcoin: High of $81,004 on November 4, weekly low of $74,921 on November 6, both per CoinGecko. As of November 7, 2026, 7:01 p.m. ET: $75,780.
  • Fed: 165,000 new jobs in October. Futures markets price a 76.8% chance of a rate hike on December 9.
  • ETFs: $1.28 billion in net outflows from US spot bitcoin ETFs from November 2 to 6, pushing the 2026 balance back below zero.
  • Dates: October CPI on November 10 at 8:30 a.m. ET, MSCI index list on November 11, Russia opens retail crypto trading on November 17.
  • Trump Media: 4,259 BTC moved to Crypto.com, and convertible noteholders can demand up to $1 billion on November 30.

Latest crypto news since November 1: the timeline

Since the start of the month, bitcoin is at −2.2% and ether at −0.8%. Behind those numbers are seven days with an election, a rally, a sell-off and a jobs number that brought rate fears back.

  • Sunday, November 1, Binance reopens withdrawals: Three days after the October 29 hack, in which about $6.3 billion was drained according to TRM Labs, Binance began reopening withdrawals. The FBI had blamed the North Korean group TraderTraitor on October 31, and Chainalysis and TRM Labs reached the same conclusion. In the first nine and a half hours, customers pulled a net $3.64 billion, or 2.1% of the $171 billion in its October 28 proof of reserves, according to CNBC. The full cost of the attack is in our analysis Binance hack one week later.
  • Monday, November 2, money leaves the ETFs: US spot bitcoin ETFs lost $398.6 million, almost all of it from BlackRock's IBIT.
  • Tuesday, November 3, Election Day: Bitcoin traded between roughly $76,500 and $77,800, and the funds shed another $115.6 million.
  • Wednesday, November 4, Democrats take both chambers: NBC News counted 54 to 44 seats in the Senate for Democrats, plus a House majority. Elizabeth Warren is now in line to chair the Senate Banking Committee. Bitcoin still jumped above $80,000 in the afternoon, to $81,004 according to CoinGecko, helped by a Wall Street rally and falling oil prices on hopes of an end to the Iran war. Short positions worth $378 million were liquidated within an hour, crypto.news reported. Details: bitcoin jumps above $80,000 after the midterms.
  • Thursday, November 5, the reversal: A sell-off in chip and AI stocks dragged the Nasdaq lower, bitcoin fell from $80,882 overnight to $75,573 in the afternoon per CoinGecko, and ether lost more than 6%. The same day, Trump Media moved 4,259 bitcoin to Crypto.com, as CoinDesk showed from blockchain data. According to an SEC filing, holders of a convertible note can demand up to $1 billion in cash on November 30. President Trump also announced a very big deal with Russia that might involve all of Europe after meeting Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev, TRT World reported, and bitcoin slipped to $75,230 overnight. Background: the November 5 bitcoin crash, Trump Media's 4,259 bitcoin and Trump's Russia deal.
  • Friday, November 6, jobs, Russia and MEXC: The US economy added 165,000 jobs in October and the unemployment rate was 4.1%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Later that day bitcoin hit the week's low of $74,921, according to CoinGecko. Russia's central bank said licensed exchanges and brokers may sell bitcoin, ether and Tether's USDT to retail investors from November 17, Cointelegraph reported. The US Treasury cut exchange MEXC off from the US financial system with a FinCEN order. And spot bitcoin ETFs lost another $411.9 million.
  • Saturday, November 7, fear takes over: The Crypto Fear and Greed Index from alternative.me fell to 25, the extreme fear zone. What followed similar readings in the past is in our study of the Fear and Greed Index in extreme fear.

The chart shows how differently the two largest coins have come through the weeks since October 1. Ether fell harder than bitcoin in every pullback, and the two steepest drops came with the Binance hack on October 29 and the Nasdaq slide on November 5. The post-midterm jump was gone after about 24 hours.

Crypto prices this week: bitcoin, ether and the top 10 cryptocurrencies

As of November 7, 2026, 7:01 p.m. ET, three of the ten largest cryptocurrencies outside stablecoins are up over seven days. The strongest was TRON (+5.6%), the weakest Hyperliquid (−11.1%). Bitcoin is at −2.2% over seven days and −7.4% over 30 days, ether at −0.7% and −9.6%.

Prices in US dollars as of November 7, 2026, 7:01 p.m. ET, data: CoinGecko. The table lists the ten largest coins by market cap, excluding stablecoins and wrapped tokens.

The total crypto market is worth $2.56 trillion. Bitcoin's share of it, known as bitcoin dominance, stands at 59.3%, a sign that money staying in the market prefers the largest coin to altcoins right now. The Fear and Greed Index reads 28, compared with 34 a week earlier. Readings of 25 and below count as extreme fear.

Bitcoin news: ETF outflows and the rate-hike scare

Two forces pushed prices down this week: money leaving the US spot ETFs and the prospect of higher rates. From November 2 to 6, the funds saw net outflows of $1,281.7 million, according to the TFTC ETF tracker. Only Wednesday, the day after the election, brought inflows.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust carried most of it: IBIT lost $806.5 million from Monday to Thursday and around $403 million on Friday, according to Crypto Briefing. That puts the funds' 2026 balance back below zero, as our ETF annual balance analysis shows. A spot ETF holds real bitcoin, so when investors redeem shares, the fund releases coins that end up on the market.

The second force is the Fed. It raised its policy rate to a range of 3.75% to 4.00% in September and held it on October 28, with two members voting for an immediate hike, according to the Fed statement. After the jobs report, futures markets put the odds of another quarter-point hike on December 9 at 76.8%, up from 66.9% a week earlier, 24/7 Wall St. reported, citing CME FedWatch. Higher rates make safe assets more attractive, and bitcoin is trading like a tech stock right now.

Where are crypto prices heading? Key levels for bitcoin and ether

For the coming week, three price levels and one date matter more than any forecast. Bitcoin trades below its 100-day moving average near $77,100 and above its 200-day average near $73,200, based on CoinGecko daily closes. Above sits $80,000, where the post-midterm rally stalled.

  • Bitcoin above $80,000: That would erase the losses since November 5 and at least interrupt the downtrend from the October 2025 record.
  • Bitcoin between $73,200 and $77,100: The range between the two averages, where the price has traded since November 5.
  • Bitcoin below the 200-day average: A close below it would be a technical warning sign that many traders watch.
  • Ethereum: Ether trades below its 100-day average near $2,360 and just above its 200-day average near $2,160.

The date is Tuesday's CPI report. A hotter print would likely push hike odds higher, while a cooler one would give the market room to breathe. How bitcoin reacted to past inflation data is in our preview of the November 10 inflation report, and the longer-term range is in our bitcoin price prediction. How bitcoin could get to $70,000, $80,000 or $100,000 by year-end is laid out in our three scenarios: will bitcoin go back up?

Our take: this week showed that crypto is trading on rates and tech stocks, not on politics in Washington. The election bounce lasted barely a day, the drop came with the Nasdaq, and ETF investors have been pulling money since rate fears returned. Until that changes, Tuesday's CPI and the Nasdaq will move bitcoin more than any crypto headline.

What the midterms mean for crypto regulation

The new Congress starts on January 3, 2027, and with it two years of divided government. For crypto, that changes three things.

  • The CLARITY Act: The market structure bill failed a Senate procedural vote 49 to 50 in September and expires on January 3 unless the Senate passes it in the lame-duck session. Our midterms recap lays out the remaining calendar.
  • Committees: Elizabeth Warren is in line to chair the Senate Banking Committee, the panel that writes crypto rules and vets nominees. In the House, Maxine Waters is expected to lead the Financial Services Committee.
  • Agencies: Nominees for the SEC and the CFTC will need Democratic votes, which gives the new majority a say over how hard regulators lean on the industry.

Crypto exchanges after the Binance hack: how the competition is positioning

The Binance hack has shifted the competition among exchanges. Traders now look for regulated platforms, verifiable reserves and a clear path to withdraw their coins.

  • Binance: The exchange is reopening withdrawals in stages. On November 6 it said on X that HYPE, INJ, APT, Plasma, NEAR and LTC should follow by around mid-November. Which coins can already leave through other networks is in Binance withdrawals phase 3.
  • MEXC: The FinCEN order takes effect 30 days after publication in the Federal Register and bars US financial institutions from moving money to or from the exchange. Details are in our report on the MEXC FinCEN order.
  • Regulated exchanges: Licensed platforms with clear custody rules are the beneficiaries. Our regulated exchange comparison lists licenses, fees and coverage.
  • Sign-up offers: Several exchanges are courting users who want to switch, OKX among them with rewards for new customers. Current terms are on our OKX deals page.

Crypto calendar: key dates for November 9 to 15

The most important date this week is the October consumer price index on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET. It is the last inflation reading before the Fed's December 9 decision, because the November figure only comes out on December 10. MSCI follows on Wednesday, and Solana's Breakpoint conference opens in London on Sunday.

What MSCI's review means for Strategy and index funds is in our report on the MSCI removal of Strategy and Metaplanet. Why this Starknet unlock carries more weight is in our Starknet unlock analysis, and the Breakpoint setup in our Solana price prediction ahead of Breakpoint.

Crypto calendar for the rest of November

Four more dates carry weight before the month ends: Russia's opening on November 17, the Fed minutes on November 18, the PCE report on November 25 and the Trump Media deadline on November 30.

What Russia's rules allow and where the limits are is in Russia opens crypto to retail investors on November 17.

What crypto investors can do now

A week of selling and fear is no reason for rushed decisions, but it is a good moment to check your own plan. Six points that have held up in phases like this:

  • Buy in steps, not all at once: If you want exposure, recurring buys spread your entry over months, so you do not have to time the bottom. Providers and costs are in our recurring buy comparison.
  • Check where your coins sit: After the Binance hack, custody matters more than ever. Our crypto exchange comparison covers licenses and fees, and the hardware wallet comparison covers self-custody devices.
  • Know the market phase: Bitcoin is more than 20% below its record and therefore in a bear market. How long such phases have lasted is in our bear market guide.
  • Mark the dates: November 10 and December 9 are the two days when rate expectations reset. Liquidations tend to cluster on such days, which matters for anyone trading with leverage.
  • Stay informed: Our newsletter sends the most important crypto news on bitcoin, ethereum and altcoins to your inbox every morning.
  • Mind the tax side: The IRS treats crypto as property, so every sale is a taxable event and realized losses can offset capital gains. The basics are on the IRS digital assets page.

Crypto news this week: frequently asked questions

Binance reopened withdrawals on November 1 after its hack, and Democrats won both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterms. Bitcoin jumped above $80,000 on November 4, then fell back below $76,000 on November 5 as chip stocks sold off. On November 6, a strong jobs report raised the odds of a December Fed hike, and Russia said it will open bitcoin, ether and USDT to retail investors on November 17.

Three things came together: a sell-off in chip and AI stocks on the Nasdaq on November 5, $1.28 billion in outflows from US spot bitcoin ETFs from November 2 to 6, and rising expectations of a Fed rate hike in December after the November 6 jobs report.

The October consumer price index comes out on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. ET. It is the last inflation reading before the Fed's December 9 decision; the November figure follows on December 10.

Nothing is decided. After the November 6 jobs report, CME FedWatch put the odds of a quarter-point hike on December 9 at 76.8%, up from 66.9% a week earlier. The policy rate has been at 3.75% to 4.00% since September.

The bill failed a Senate procedural vote 49 to 50 in September and expires on January 3, 2027, unless the Senate passes it in the lame-duck session. With Democrats taking both chambers, a new version would have to start over in the next Congress.
