Cryptocurrency markets recovered from early losses on Wednesday, with Bitcoin climbing back above $78,000 as investors assessed the implications of the Democrats winning control of both chambers of the US Congress and the potential impact on digital asset regulation.

Bitcoin briefly touched a six-week low before reversing its decline to trade 0.8% higher at $78,210, while Ethereum gained 1.9% to $2,315.

The recovery followed an initial sell-off as traders considered whether the election results could slow efforts to introduce a more favourable regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies.

President Donald Trump has supported reducing restrictions on the digital asset industry, while some Democratic lawmakers have also backed legislation intended to provide regulatory clarity and encourage innovation.

The new balance of power in Congress could influence the pace and direction of cryptocurrency legislation, although policy changes would depend on negotiations between lawmakers and the White House.

The cryptocurrency industry has spent more than $300 million supporting candidates considered favourable to digital assets across the current and previous US election cycles, according to Reuters.

The spending has benefited politicians from both major parties, reflecting the industry’s efforts to build support for cryptocurrency-related policies regardless of which party controls Congress.

The recovery in digital assets coincided with an improvement in US stock market futures, which rose approximately 0.3% after falling by as much as 2% during overnight trading.

The reversal suggested that investors were reassessing the immediate consequences of the election results following an initially cautious reaction.

However, Bitcoin remains around 36% below its October 2025 record high of more than $122,000, highlighting the scale of the cryptocurrency’s decline despite Wednesday’s rebound.

The broader cryptocurrency market was valued at approximately $2.6 trillion, according to CoinMarketCap, as investors continued to navigate heightened volatility and uncertainty surrounding regulation.

For investors, the latest recovery indicates that cryptocurrency markets are beginning to stabilise following the initial election-related sell-off, although the longer-term implications for digital asset legislation remain unclear.

Attention will now turn to the regulatory priorities of the newly elected Congress and developments across wider financial markets, as investors assess whether Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can sustain their recovery.
