Democratic candidate Bob Brooks defeated Republican Rep. Ryan Mackenzie in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, flipping a House seat and adding to Democrats’ effort to win control of the chamber.

Brooks chairs a Pennsylvania firefighters’ union. The district was one of four Republican-held seats in the state that Democrats targeted during this election cycle.

Trump carried the district by 3 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. Democrats are seeking to retake the House and need a net gain of four seats nationwide to take control.

The four Pennsylvania districts are part of the party’s state-level effort, while the four-seat threshold applies across the country. Brooks’ win counts as one pickup in that campaign, but the national majority depends on the overall balance of seats.

House control could shape the next Congress’ policy agenda, including crypto policy. The Pennsylvania result adds to that fight, though it does not by itself settle which party will lead the chamber.
