Summary

  • Ethereum's next upgrade, Glamsterdam, has raised concerns that it could strain the gas-fee settlement system used by existing dApps.
  • The upgrade, which includes EIP-8037 and EIP-8038, would change the cost structure for data storage and access, potentially creating mismatches between the fees dApps actually pay and the amounts billed to users.
  • CryptoSlate said failed transactions could allow wallet approval data to be reused, raising the possibility of wallet control being seized, while the Ethereum Foundation plans to reflect the review findings in the final design of the Glamsterdam upgrade.

Ethereum's next upgrade, known as "Glamsterdam," may affect the gas-fee settlement systems used by existing decentralized applications, or dApps, raising concerns about compatibility.

CryptoSlate reported on November 7 that the Ethereum Foundation asked developers on November 6 to review how changes to gas-fee calculations under the Glamsterdam upgrade could affect existing applications.

Glamsterdam includes the EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 proposals. The two changes would adjust the cost of writing new data to the blockchain and accessing existing data.

The concern is that, if the upgrade is implemented, changes to gas accounting could create mismatches in some dApps between the fees actually paid and the amounts charged to users. A service that processes transactions on behalf of users, for example, could end up charging less than it spent on fees, or more.

The issue could also affect digital-asset security, CryptoSlate reported. If a transaction fails under certain conditions, existing wallet approval data could be reused. An attacker could exploit that to seize control of a wallet.

The Ethereum Foundation has asked developers to check whether their existing services could run into such problems and report whether they can be resolved through code changes or updates. The review results will be reflected in the final design of the Glamsterdam upgrade.

Separately, the rollout of the Glamsterdam upgrade, which had been scheduled for October 26, has been delayed.
