Canton is a layer 1 blockchain developed by Digital Asset for regulated financial institutions. The problem it aims to solve is the need for banks and asset managers to transact on a blockchain without exposing transaction data and client positions to the public, as happens on Ethereum or Solana.

At the infrastructure layer, Canton uses the Daml smart contract language, which defines who may approve, execute, and view each contract. Each institution can run its own private network, and the Global Synchronizer then connects those networks without its operators being able to read the contents of transactions. This design makes Canton work as a network of many networks, so privacy is preserved without isolating each institution.

At the application layer, the Broadridge Distributed Ledger Repo platform processed an average of around $280 billion per day in August 2025, while DTCC has been testing the tokenization of US government debt securities on Canton since December 2025. Goldman Sachs is also one of Canton’s early backers, and Visa has been a Super Validator since March 2026. The involvement of these institutions is the network’s main source of activity, although most of that activity does not yet use CC directly.
