LPL Financial grew its spot Bitcoin ETF holdings by 50% in the third quarter, bringing the position to $261 million.
That figure comes from the firm’s 13F filing for the quarter ending September 30. LPL is one of the biggest independent broker-dealers in the US.
What LPL actually disclosed
LPL’s latest snapshot shows US spot Bitcoin ETF holdings worth $261 million, up 50% from the prior quarter. Spot Bitcoin ETFs hold actual Bitcoin. They let investors gain exposure through an ordinary brokerage account, with no need for a crypto exchange or a hardware wallet.
The firm’s earlier filings show a pattern of gradual building. LPL had been adding step by step to products including the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) and the Franklin Bitcoin ETF (EZBC).
The filing also disclosed a separate $112 million position tied to what is described as “Saylor’s Strategy.” That sits outside the ETF bucket. Combined, the two positions give LPL a crypto-linked footprint that spans more than one type of vehicle.
One caveat applies to all 13F data. Holdings at a broker-dealer like LPL can reflect client accounts and advisor decisions, not just a house view from the corporate treasury. The filing confirms the exposure exists. It does not necessarily tell you who chose it or why.
A big number inside a much bigger firm
Scale matters here. As of the same September 30 date, LPL managed approximately $2.56 trillion in total client assets. Advisory assets made up around $1.561 trillion of that total.

Against that backdrop, $261 million is a small slice.
The firm also serves around 32,600 financial advisors. Each advisor is a potential channel for client conversations about crypto exposure, and the ETF wrapper makes those conversations easier to have inside a traditional compliance framework.
LPL is not alone
The same filing season showed similar moves elsewhere. Creative Planning, another large wealth manager, reported a 43% increase in its Bitcoin ETF holdings during the same quarter.
The third-quarter 13F filings broadly revealed rising exposure to Bitcoin ETFs among wealth management firms.
Why the ETF wrapper keeps winning
Spot Bitcoin ETFs solved a practical problem for firms like LPL. Before these products, an advisor who wanted to give a client Bitcoin exposure had to deal with custody, exchange accounts and a fair amount of operational awkwardness.
LPL’s spread across issuers, with positions in both ARKB and EZBC, also hints at a pragmatic approach. Rather than betting on a single fund manager, the holdings span multiple products.
What this means for investors and the market
The most direct read is that Bitcoin exposure is becoming a routine line item at mainstream wealth managers.
The risk side deserves equal billing. A 50% increase from a small base is still a small allocation. Quarterly 13F snapshots also lag reality: by the time the public sees them, positions may already have changed.
For anyone tracking institutional crypto adoption, the next round of 13F filings will be the real test. If LPL, Creative Planning and their peers keep adding, the trend gains credibility.
