Csaba Finta

Revolut has unexpectedly announced the withdrawal of its commodity trading services in Hungary, leaving local customers unable to purchase precious metals through the fintech platform. The change takes effect on Wednesday, 4 November, and reportedly comes without any prior warning to users.

    What happens to existing investments?

According to Revb, a portal specialising in Revolut-related developments, the decision exclusively affects Hungarian customers. The service, which has been available for years, allowed users to trade commodities, including gold, silver and other precious metals, directly through the Revolut app.

Under the new measures, customers will no longer be able to place buy orders or increase their existing commodity positions. New users will also be prevented from registering for the service in Hungary. However, existing investors will have time to manage their holdings. Revolut customers who currently own commodities can sell their investments through the app until 4 January 2027.

The fintech company has also confirmed that selling fees associated with commodity transactions will be waived throughout this period, giving customers an opportunity to liquidate their holdings without incurring additional charges.

The affected commodities include gold (XAU), silver (XAG), palladium (XPD) and platinum (XPT). Although the buying option may still appear in the application, reports indicate that transactions are failing when users attempt to complete purchases.

No official explanation for the withdrawal

Revolut has not yet provided an official explanation for its decision to discontinue commodity trading services in Hungary. The investment service was previously provided to Hungarian customers by Revolut Ltd, which operates under the supervision of the UK’s financial regulator.

The announcement has raised questions among users, particularly given the lack of advance notice and the fact that the measure appears to be limited to Hungary rather than affecting the platform’s international customer base.

Another service disappears from the Hungarian market

The latest development follows Revolut’s previous withdrawal of cryptocurrency services from Hungary in December 2025, which was linked to regulatory requirements at the time. Although Hungary subsequently eased its cryptocurrency regulatory framework, Revolut has not resumed its crypto services in the country.

The company has reportedly indicated that another service will soon become available on its platform, although further details have yet to be disclosed. For Hungarian customers holding precious metals through Revolut, the immediate priority is to review their existing positions and decide whether to sell them before the 4 January 2027 deadline.
