Riot Platforms Inc shares jumped 15.71% to $13.70 on Tuesday, ahead of the company's third-quarter earnings report scheduled for after the market close.

Wall Street projects a loss of 32 cents per share on revenue of $160.75 million. This forecasted revenue is approximately 8% lower than the $174.20 million posted in the previous quarter, which exceeded analyst expectations of $152.06 million.

Mining and Engineering Performance

Bitcoin mining remains the core driver of Riot's business, though the revenue mix has shifted in recent quarters. In the second quarter, mining generated $113.70 million in revenue, while engineering contributed $37.30 million and data centers added $23.20 million.

Bitcoin production increased to 1,587 coins from 1,426 a year earlier. The average cost to produce each coin was $49,912.

Shift Toward AI Data Centers

During the second quarter, Riot signed a 20-year lease with an unnamed top AI laboratory for 191 megawatts at its Rockdale campus. The company expects approximately $9.10 billion in initial contract revenue from this agreement.

CEO Jason Les described the deal as a turning point for Riot's evolution into a large-scale data center developer. Additionally, Riot completed the initial 25-megawatt handover to AMD on schedule and within budget. As of the end of the last quarter, the company held 11,380 bitcoin and $548.90 million in cash.

What the Numbers Show

The current stock rally reflects anticipation of operational strength despite projected losses. While analysts expect a revenue decline from the previous quarter, the market appears focused on the long-term value of the newly signed AI lease rather than immediate quarterly profitability. The $9.10 billion contract value dwarfs current quarterly revenues, suggesting that future cash flow visibility is improving even if near-term earnings remain negative.
