Institutional participation in Bitcoin yield strategies is broadening as Stacks' third bitcoin staking bond reaches full allocation with 1,005 BTC. The sale lifts total commitments across the first three bonds to 1,740 BTC and sets up Bond 4 to open on Dec. 3, 2026.
Highlights
- Stacks' Bond 3 sold out at a 3% target yield, bringing in 1,005 BTC—more than the Genesis Bond and Bond 2 combined.
- Bullish Capital and 21shares utilized BitGo qualified custody for bitcoin staking, marking institutional adoption from both public company and regulated asset manager segments.
- Stacks will open Bond 4 on Dec. 3, 2026, and plans a PoX-6 upgrade in 2027 to enable open-auction BTC staking and borrowing against staked BTC.
Bond 3 demand and institutional participation
Bullish Capital and 21shares represent two different institutional use cases for bitcoin staking, one from a public company balance sheet and the other from a regulated digital asset manager. 21shares also participated in the Genesis Bond in September 2026, while both firms used BitGo qualified custody, which opened to bitcoin staking on Nov. 3, 2026.
Alasdair Foster, CEO of Bullish Capital, said the structure allows the firm to earn on its capital without taking on risks it cannot underwrite. He said bitcoin staking with Stacks lets the company earn BTC on its holdings while keeping the same custody controls it already uses.
Institutional investors considering bitcoin yield typically focus on return, custody and counterparty exposure. Stacks positions its offering around a preset target rate for each bond, self-custodied BTC on the Bitcoin base layer, and no intermediary lender or platform holding the bitcoin between participants and the protocol.
Market implications and next phase
Muneeb Ali, CEO of Stacks Labs and founder of Stacks, said Bond 3's sellout indicates institutional demand to earn BTC is already present. He said participation by an asset manager such as 21shares and a large public bitcoin holder in the same bond shows bitcoin capital markets are taking shape.
The staking model pairs BTC on the Bitcoin L1 with STX, the native asset of Stacks, with participants locking STX at a current parameter of 5% of the BTC value for the bond term. Yield comes from Stacks miners, who spend BTC to mine blocks and earn STX, with that BTC distributed to participants weekly onchain.
Stacks says it has distributed more than 4,500 BTC in rewards to participants since 2021, according to Dune. Bond 4 opens around Dec. 3, 2026, for institutions and individual holders, and the project says a planned PoX-6 upgrade in 2027 is set to introduce an open auction that would let anyone stake BTC through a self-custodial path while enabling borrowing against staked BTC.
Our earlier report on Philippine government bond reforms looked at plans to introduce a new pricing convention for peso-denominated sovereign debt and pursue inclusion in J.P. Morgan’s Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets, steps aimed at improving comparability, liquidity, and foreign participation. We also noted that market upgrades alone don’t guarantee more productive investment, arguing that outcomes still depend on macro conditions, fiscal credibility, and deeper domestic capital-market development beyond sovereign bond trading.
