The Tether USDt price remained close to its one-dollar target as investors assessed a stronger reserve position and the issuer's response to the Binance hack. Reserve buffer nearly doubles
In a 30 October announcement, Tether said its attestation for the third quarter of 2026 was prepared by BDO and covered reserves as of September 30. The company reported USD 1.5 billion in net operating profit for the quarter and USD 4.5 billion for the first three quarters of the year.
Tether said its reserve buffer had nearly doubled to USD 7.95 billion from USD 4.1 billion at the end of the second quarter. Total reserve assets stood at USD 191.5 billion at quarter-end, while direct and indirect holdings of U.S. Treasury bills totaled USD 132.4 billion. The issuer also said USDT issuance had remained broadly steady at USD 184 billion across the first three quarters.
Freeze highlights issuer control
On November 2, Tether said it had frozen more than USD 1.5 billion in USDt within 30 minutes of the October 29 Binance hack. In its official statement, the company said the FBI had attributed the attack to North Korea. Tether also reported that, as of October 31, it had helped freeze approximately USD 1.6 billion across more than 3,590 wallets for the U.S. Department of Justice, the Secret Service and the FBI.
The episode underlines a structural feature of USDT: unlike a freely transferable asset without an issuer, Tether can restrict transactions involving identified wallet addresses. That capability may support law-enforcement cooperation, but it also means that centralized control remains an important consideration for holders and market participants.
Stablecoin context for investors
The Tether USDt price is designed to track the U.S. dollar rather than deliver conventional speculative growth. The reported reserve cushion and liquidity composition are therefore more relevant to redemption confidence and market functioning than a short-term price target. Market participants should distinguish the token's near-peg trading from the issuer's separate reserve, compliance and operational risks.
