Signals possible additional military action against Iran

Optimistic on a Russia-Ukraine peace deal

Three-way talks set for Nov. 10-11 in Abu Dhabi

President Donald Trump said he will soon decide whether to resume large-scale military operations against Iran. The same day, he met privately with a special envoy to Russian President Vladimir Putin and raised the possibility of ending the war in Ukraine.

Axios reported that Trump discussed Iran with senior national security advisers during his weekly intelligence briefing on Nov. 5. It was the first such meeting since the midterm elections.

“If additional military action against Iran is necessary, we are fully prepared,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “You’ll know soon.”

On the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump said an agreement was close. Reuters reported that he held a private meeting at the White House that day with Kirill Dmitriev, Putin’s special envoy.

“It will be a big agreement, and it will deal with more than Ukraine,” Trump said. “The scope of the agreement could expand to all of Europe.”

The U.S. is scheduled to mediate talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Nov. 10-11. Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and special envoy, said in Brussels that day that he had discussed security guarantees for Ukraine and the broader European security framework with Ukraine, NATO and European officials.
