Western Union's case for issuing its own stablecoin starts with cash it cannot put to work. The company launched USDPT on 4 May 2026, after announcing it on 28 October 2025. The token is a US dollar stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank and built on Solana. In Western Union's own description, it is an always-on settlement asset. It is designed to eliminate the latency and fragmentation of traditional correspondent banking rails.

For someone holding dollars on-chain, that adds one more Solana stablecoin. This one is redeemable 1:1 through a federally chartered bank. It also brings a physical exit: Western Union says exchange customers in select markets will be able to buy and hold USDPT and cash out in local currency at its locations.

What USDPT Is and What Backs It

USDPT is a US dollar stablecoin redeemable 1:1 for US dollars. It is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A., a US national trust bank, on Solana. For every token issued, Western Union says an equal amount of USD is held in reserves. Those reserves include bank deposits, US Treasury bills and similar cash equivalents. The official Solana contract address is HVWf8JmLoHs99Lw8Psf3fyqAtA4crWxCPkrmSdNjhNH3.

The same page is explicit about the limits. USDPT is not issued, backed, approved or guaranteed by the US government, and it is not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Anchorage Digital chief executive Nathan McCauley said that being a federally chartered bank provides the foundation for USDPT. In his words, it can work as trusted, always-on financial infrastructure from day one.

The Cash Parked in Correspondent Accounts

Cross-border payments still run through correspondent banking accounts that have to be funded before money moves. Western Union's head of digital assets, Malcolm Clark, has described that prefunding as expensive "because we have to park capital on those correspondent banking layers."

The fix the company is building is Treasury and Agent Settlement. Western Union says it will enable near-instant, 24/7 USDPT settlement between the company and its global agents. In its words, that will let it "reduce idle balances and deploy liquidity more dynamically across its network." The company operates in more than 200 countries and territories and over 130 currencies.

The Visa Card, the Wallet and the 24/7 Payouts

  • Digital Asset Network, to connect licensed virtual currency exchanges and custodians to Western Union's global payout and liquidity infrastructure. Through it, exchange customers in select markets can buy and hold USDPT and cash out in local fiat at Western Union locations.
  • A mobile app pairing a self-custody USDPT wallet with a Visa payment card, so customers in select markets can spend USDPT anywhere Visa is accepted.
  • Money transfers received in USDPT, 24 hours a day, in select markets.
  • Stable by Western Union, a consumer-facing spend capability that the company says will launch in 2026 in more than 40 countries.

Clark described the exit in plain terms: "The consumer can literally pay a small fee, change from crypto to fiat, and then walk into a Western Union store and exit with cash."
