- XRPL developers build experimental native perpetual futures infrastructure
- RLUSD could support leveraged trading and margin accounts
- Proposed upgrade introduces ten new transaction types
XRP Ledger Foundation developers have built an experimental implementation of native perpetual futures trading, potentially allowing leveraged cryptocurrency derivatives to operate directly on XRPL using collateral assets such as Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin.
According to the foundation's November 4 technical study, the proposed system introduces 10 transaction types and five ledger-entry types covering margin accounts, order matching, funding payments and liquidations.
The implementation contains approximately 15,070 lines of handwritten code across 81 files. However, it remains an experimental development branch rather than an approved network upgrade.
XRP Ledger Developers Build Native Futures Infrastructure
The proposed PerpetualFutures amendment would allow operators to establish derivatives exchanges directly on XRP Ledger.
Unlike traditional futures, perpetual contracts have no expiration date. Traders maintain leveraged long or short positions while periodic funding payments help keep contract prices aligned with underlying markets.
The architecture supports both cross-margin and isolated-margin trading, with collateral deposited into dedicated accounts.
It also introduces price-oracle calculations and liquidation procedures designed to manage positions when available margin becomes insufficient.
The proposal represents a different approach from an earlier XRPL derivatives sidechain concept, which explored leveraged trading and options using separate infrastructure.
Instead, the latest design aims to bring the core margin and order-matching mechanisms directly into XRPL's main protocol.
RLUSD Could Bring Derivatives Trading Directly Onto XRPL
The proposal also addresses a significant gap between Ripple's institutional trading business and the XRP Ledger itself.
Ripple Prime already provides institutional access to derivatives through Hyperliquid, including round-the-clock swaps across more than 100 markets.
Eligible clients can use RLUSD as collateral, but those underlying perpetual markets operate outside XRPL.
The foundation's feasibility study estimates that Hyperliquid's XRP market held approximately $219 million in open interest on November 4.
A native exchange could eventually compete for some of that trading activity.
However, the development would not automatically establish institutional adoption.
Earlier concerns about liquidity in Ripple Prime's perpetual markets demonstrate why market makers and sufficient trading depth remain essential.
The proposed infrastructure could also complement existing institutional RLUSD collateral arrangements, although no participating institution has committed to using a native XRPL perpetual exchange.
Why the Futures Upgrade Is Not Ready for Mainnet
The technical study estimates 320 development hours and another 560 hours of review, alongside two external security audits.
Additional review, audit and integration costs are estimated at $331,000–$387,000, excluding the initial development hours.
Critical questions remain around liquidity, price-oracle reliability, collateral issuer controls and the handling of losses during liquidations.
The proposal is also separate from XRPL's native lending upgrade, which had reached 60% validator support on November 6 but remained below activation requirements.
Even completed code requires formal review and governance approval. XRPL's recent security amendment demonstrated that activation depends on sustained validator consensus.
