An even four-way split sounded like the safe way to ride out October. Instead, every coin in the basket slid, and one pick dragged far harder than the rest. Which one hurt most, and how far must it climb to…

Since October 1, a $1,000 crypto basket split equally among Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC), Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH), XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) and Solana (CRYPTO:SOL) has lost money. As of November 4, the basket is worth $886.54, down $113.46, or 11.3%. All four coins fell, showing how the October selloff hit the whole market at once.

The $1,000 Crypto Basket Is Now Worth $886.54

Here’s how each coin in the basket has performed as of the morning of November 4.

Bitcoin held up best, with its price at $236.98 and a loss of just $13.02. Ethereum and XRP followed, down $25.06 and $29.12, respectively. Solana, however, saw the steepest decline, dropping to just $203.75, a loss of $46.25.

Solana Takes the Biggest Hit

Over the past month, Solana’s performance has been particularly poor. It closed at a high of $120.76 on October 5, then dropped to a low of $91.84 on November 2. Solana now trades 67% below its all-time high of $293.31 from January 2025. XRP trades 63.8% below its own all-time high, and Ethereum trades 50.8% below its $4,946.05 high, both set in 2025.

Putting the full $1,000 into Bitcoin alone would be worth $947.92 today. The same $1,000 in Solana alone would be worth only $814.99.

A November Bounce Has Trimmed October’s Losses

Despite October’s downturn, early November has brought some relief. All four coins have risen since the October 31 close. Ethereum is up 8%, XRP is up 5.6%, Bitcoin is up 4%, and Solana is up 1.4%.

Even so, every coin trades below breakeven, the price that would bring a piece back to its starting $250. Bitcoin needs a 5.5% gain to reach breakeven, Ethereum needs 11.1%, XRP needs 13.2%, and Solana needs 22.7%.

Solana faces the steepest climb and has shown the weakest bounce so far. It also trades under its 50-day average of $108.61, a figure traders use to gauge the medium-term trend. Bitcoin also stays below its 50-day average of $81,909.

Did Diversifying This $1,000 Crypto Basket Pay Off?

Spreading the $1,000 across four coins cushioned against the worst single pick, but it still trailed the best one. The basket’s $886.54 beat an all-Solana position worth $814.99, though it fell short of an all-Bitcoin position worth $947.92.

The biggest cryptocurrencies tend to move together, so diversifying among them cushions losses but doesn’t prevent them in a market-wide downturn. Bitcoin fell the least of the four, so every dollar moved into the other three made the loss bigger.

Bitcoin’s next test is a close back above its October 1 level of $84,842, which could lift the rest of the basket too. A close below the November 2 low of $76,709 could mean October’s decline still has further to go, and Solana could feel it first.
