Ethereum's quantum deadline just got a year shorter, at least as a hope. Justin Drake said on Tuesday at Devcon 8 in Mumbai that he hopes Ethereum can wrap up its full post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028.

That is 12 months ahead of the date the Ethereum Foundation's Protocol cluster put in writing only two months ago. If you hold ETH, the gap matters because the whole plan exists to keep the network running if quantum computers ever break the cryptography it uses today.

The Written Plan Still Says December 2029

In a 7 September post on protocol priorities, the EF Protocol cluster said it aims for Ethereum's base layer to be quantum-resistant across all three layers (execution, consensus and data) by December 2029. The post said that date lines up with the 2029 migration targets set independently by Google, Cloudflare and Microsoft.

The same post told Ethereum to plan for "Q-day" happening as early as 2030. The foundation called that "a deliberately aggressive assumption."

It also said the team would treat the deadline as non-negotiable at least until January 2027. That is when quantum progress will be reassessed with the guidance of outside experts.

Five Hardforks Stand Between Today and Full Readiness

The EF plan places full post-quantum readiness in a fork it calls L*, five hardforks after Glamsterdam. Shipping Glamsterdam in December 2026 and L* in December 2029 already requires an average of 7.2 months per fork.

That is why a 2028 finish is a big ask. If the five-fork sequence stays the same, finishing a year earlier would mean shipping upgrades faster than a pace the foundation itself described as demanding.

The plan also has a fallback. A milestone called minimum viable post-quantum, or MV-PQ, was added at an earlier fork named J*. The foundation says MV-PQ is designed to keep Ethereum operating through Q-day with reduced guarantees, so it is a temporary safeguard rather than the finished job.

What Drake's Date Does Not Settle Yet

No video or official transcript of the Devcon 8 talk was available for this article. It is not yet clear which forks Drake counts toward his 2028 date, or how his timeline maps onto the five-fork sequence in the foundation's post.

He also paired "post-quantum" with "post-AI", and what the second half of that transition covers was not spelled out in the material available.

The pressure on Ethereum's timeline is not new. Starknet, which settles on Ethereum, has already opened a vote on leaving Ethereum to become a post-quantum L1 of its own.

The next fixed date to watch is January 2027. That is when the foundation reassesses quantum progress with outside experts, and when you will find out whether December 2029 holds, slips, or moves closer to the date Drake is hoping for.
