The initiative will introduce blockchain-based shares linked to a feeder fund investing in the Schroder International Selection Fund Emerging Market Bonds strategy. The move expands the range of traditional financial assets entering tokenization, taking the market beyond the US Treasury and money market products that have dominated much of the sector.
How the Schroders Tokenized Fund Will Work
Rather than giving investors direct ownership of individual bonds held by the main investment fund, the structure will issue tokenized shares representing participation in a feeder fund. That feeder fund will invest in Schroders' existing emerging market bond strategy.
The value of the blockchain-based shares will follow the underlying fund's disclosed net asset value. Centrifuge will provide the technical infrastructure for bringing the investment structure onto Solana.
The underlying strategy invests in debt securities issued by governments and companies across emerging markets. Its performance is therefore influenced by several factors, including interest rates, borrowers' creditworthiness, currency movements and the economic conditions of the countries involved.
This exposure carries a different risk profile from short-term US Treasury securities and money market funds, which have become prominent assets in the tokenization market.
Tokenized Real-World Assets Expand Beyond US Treasuries
Data from RWA.xyz puts the tokenized real-world asset market at approximately $39 billion. Around $14 billion of that total consists of tokenized US Treasury bonds and money market products.
Schroders' planned launch adds an emerging market debt strategy to the mix, illustrating how blockchain-based investment products are beginning to cover asset classes with different sources of risk and return.
Centrifuge, which provides infrastructure for tokenizing real-world assets, has more than $750 million in tokenized assets on its platform. The Schroders initiative will also mark the asset manager's first product on Solana.
Schroders' Previous Tokenization Initiative
The company has already taken steps toward tokenized investment products. Schroders previously received approval in Ireland to establish a tokenized share class for a dollar-denominated money market fund.
The Solana project represents another development in its use of blockchain technology for fund structures, this time involving an actively managed emerging market bond strategy.
Investor Access and Fund Details Remain Unclear
The announcement did not disclose which categories of investors will be eligible to participate, the minimum investment amount or the fund's initial size.
Those details mean the planned tokenized structure should not be interpreted as an investment product that is immediately available to the general public. Its eventual accessibility will depend on the eligibility requirements and terms established for the fund.
