World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture co-founded by President Donald Trump and his three sons, said Thursday it is launching a buyback program for its WLFI governance token, funded by an initial allocation that may draw on revenue from reserves backing its USD1 stablecoin as well as other sources.
The company disclosed the plan in a social media post and did not say how many tokens it intends to repurchase. It said buybacks are meant to become a permanent feature of its strategy, and that the program is designed to encourage participation in WLFI governance and strengthen voting power among long-term holders.
The announcement follows a sharp selloff in the token after this week's U.S. midterm elections, in which the Republican Party lost its majority in both chambers of Congress. WLFI has dropped roughly 10% since the vote and is down more than 60% so far this year, according to CoinMarketCap.com.
A separate Trump-linked token, $TRUMP, fell 22% this week to a record low.
World Liberty was set up in 2024 by the president, his sons and a group of partners that includes the Witkoff family. The Trump family holds a 38% stake and earns money through the sale or use of the venture's crypto tokens, the WLFI governance token and the USD1 stablecoin.
