U.S. Bancorp used its third-quarter results release on October 15 to outline two strategic initiatives: a live pilot for its USBDC stablecoin and new credit cards for small businesses. The bank's release said the developments support a broader payments strategy built around banking, cards and digital assets.

U.S. Bank completed a cross-border payment between its own entities in North America and Europe using USBDC, its proprietary US dollar-backed stablecoin. The transaction ran on the Stellar blockchain and maintained links to the bank's existing finance, risk, compliance and operations infrastructure, according to the U.S. Bancorp release.

Stablecoin Pilot Remains Early

The pilot tested capabilities including minting, payment redemption, freezing, clawbacks and tokenized-asset management. U.S. Bank said it is exploring applications in liquidity management, collateral mobility and cross-border treasury operations, while the transaction also validated its internally developed Digital Asset Platform.

The initiative is strategically relevant because it connects blockchain settlement with regulated banking controls. The release presents the project as a step toward faster and more transparent settlement, not as a broad customer rollout. For investors, the commercial opportunity therefore remains tied to future adoption and regulatory development rather than to current stablecoin revenue.

Small-Business Cards Add Reach

U.S. Bank also launched Business Essentials and Business Essentials Plus. Both cards offer unlimited 2% cash back on eligible purchases and additional rewards for customers with qualifying business checking balances. Business Essentials has no annual fee and can earn up to 2.5% total cash back, while the Plus card carries a 295 US dollar annual fee and can earn up to 3.5% total cash back.

The products include Spend Management and ExtendPay tools, and new cardholders can qualify for cash-back welcome offers of 500 or 1,000 US dollars, depending on the card. The launch is designed to deepen relationships with small-business customers by combining deposits, payments and expense management.

Third-Quarter Momentum Supports Strategy

The same release reported record net revenue of 7.970 billion US dollars for the third quarter, up 5.6% year over year in net interest income and 14.9% in fee revenue. Net income rose 10.0% to 2.202 billion US dollars, while diluted earnings per share increased 9.8% to 1.34 US dollars. Payments transformation revenue grew 6.5% year over year.
