Volante Technologies provides cloud-native payment technology that helps financial institutions modernize their payment infrastructure, support real-time and cross-border transactions, and manage evolving industry standards such as ISO 20022. Its platform supports banks and other financial institutions as they transition from legacy payment systems toward more flexible, automated operations. The company is also investing in AI and emerging payment technologies, including stablecoins. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Volante Technologies Global Head of Product and Strategic Business, Nadish Lad, to learn more about the company’s technology, its role in the development of real-time payments, and its vision for the future of the payments industry.

Nadish Lad’s Background

Nadish Lad

When asked about his background, Lad shared:

I have spent almost 30 years in payments, which probably says something about how much I enjoy the industry.

I started my career in cheque payments in London and have worked across major banks, technology providers and consultancies including Citi, Ernst & Young, Unisys and Jack Henry Associates.

One of the things I enjoy most about payments is that it is constantly evolving. When I started, the focus was very different to what it is today. We are now talking about real-time payments, cloud-native infrastructure, AI and digital assets.

I joined Volante in 2015, just as we were beginning to expand our payments business. It has been exciting to watch the company grow from a challenger in the market to a trusted payments modernization partner for some of the world’s largest financial institutions.

Leadership Responsibilities

When asked about his primary responsibilities, Lad explained:

One of the things I like about Volante is that we have always kept a startup mentality, even as we have grown. That has allowed me to work across product, business development, go-to-market strategy, and product marketing at different points in my career.

Today, I focus primarily on product strategy and product-market alignment. A big part of my role is anticipating where payments are heading and ensuring we build solutions that help customers navigate changes such as real-time payments, ISO 20022 and emerging technologies like AI and stablecoins.

Favorite Memory

When asked about his favorite memory working for Volante, Lad recalled:

That is a difficult question because there have been so many.

Every customer win is celebrated, particularly when you are competing against much larger and more established players. Every successful go-live is also a huge team achievement and something we celebrate across the business.

If I had to pick one moment, it would be enabling the first real-time payment in the history of the United States when The Clearing House RTP network launched, between two banks. Being part of a moment that genuinely changed the payments landscape is something I will always be proud of.

Core Products And Features

When asked about Volante’s core products and features, Lad detailed:

At its core, Volante helps financial institutions modernize payments. We started with technology focused on automatic code generation and managing complex global payment standards.

Over the last decade, we have expanded that into a full cloud-native payments ecosystem that supports everything from real-time and high-value payments to cross-border transactions and ISO 20022 transformation.

Customers can also process cross-border payments themselves via our Payments as a Service offering.

Navigating Industry Challenges

When asked about recent challenges in the payments industry and how Volante has addressed them, Lad explained:

The biggest challenge is probably the pace of change. Payments are always evolving, but the last few years have felt particularly busy, trend-wise. Financial institutions are dealing with real-time payments, ISO 20022 migration, cloud transformation, agentic AI, digital assets and new regulatory requirements simultaneously.

For us, the answer has always been focusing on innovation and automation. We dedicate a significant amount of our resources and a portion of our talent pool to research and development because staying ahead of the technology curve is not optional in this industry.

The moment you stop innovating, you start falling behind.

How The Technology Has Evolved

When asked how Volante’s technology has evolved since launching, Lad said:

Back in 2001, we were already using visual modeling and automatic code generation to accelerate development and delivery. At the time, that was a fairly pioneering approach.

In 2015, we built a payments platform from the ground up using modern microservices architecture, which has now become a market-leading system. As cloud adoption accelerated, we were also one of the first providers to offer Payments as a Service across three continents.

Since then, we have continued to evolve our technology stack, adopting NoSQL databases, implementing full CI/CD pipelines, and more recently, investing heavily in AI.

That investment extends beyond customer-facing capabilities, with AI being used internally for areas such as use case generation, code generation and testing.

The common thread throughout has been a willingness to embrace new technologies where they can deliver meaningful value for our customers.

Key Company Milestones

When asked about some of Volante’s most significant milestones, Lad highlighted:

As mentioned, processing the first real-time payment in the United States is certainly one that stands out.

Beyond that, some of our biggest milestones have been the relationships we have built with some of the world’s leading financial institutions and organizations. Over the years, companies such as Visa, Citi, Wells Fargo and Poste Italiane have trusted Volante to support critical payments transformation initiatives, which is something we are incredibly proud of.

There have also been important milestones in our evolution: in 2018, we launched our cloud-based Payments as a Service offering.

More recently, 2025 has been a significant year, with 18 customer go-lives, including one client that processes around $1.4 trillion in transactions daily.

Additionally, being recognized as a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Banking Payment Hub Platforms was an important milestone because it reflects both our vision and our ability to execute.

Customer Success Stories

When asked to share specific customer success stories, Lad explained:

One story I often come back to is a major custodian bank that wanted to be first to market when real-time payments launched in the United States. We worked closely with the bank and helped it process the first RTP transaction on the day the network went live.

Another great example is a Tier 1 global investment bank that wanted to become the first transaction bank in the cloud.

Volante was selected as the payment processor, and within just eight months the bank launched its cloud-based transaction banking platform.

Today, it supports more than 16 payment rails across three continents on a single platform, with a centralized operations team, real-time processing and stronger liquidity management for customers.

What I enjoy about these projects is that they are never just technology upgrades. They fundamentally change what a financial institution can do for its customers.

Total Addressable Market

When asked about the total addressable market Volante is pursuing, Lad revealed:

We estimate the total addressable market to be north of $9 billion in annual recurring revenue.

Competitive Differentiation

When asked what differentiates Volante from its competition, Lad identified four areas:

The first is innovation. We have consistently invested in research and development to stay ahead of the technology curve and help customers navigate industry change.

The second is our focus on customers. That commitment exists across every level of the organization. Our leadership team, including our founders, remain accessible and engaged, which helps us build strong long-term relationships.

The third is our culture. For more than 25 years, we have viewed customers as partners and worked alongside them to solve complex challenges rather than simply acting as a technology provider.

Finally, our structure allows us to move quickly. We maintain a relatively flat organization, which means decisions can be made efficiently and we can respond faster to both market opportunities and customer needs.

Future Goals

When asked about Volante’s future goals, Lad explained:

We are continuing to invest heavily in innovation to help our customers modernize payments while improving agility, efficiency and operational resilience.

Embedding AI into payment journeys through an agentic framework is one priority. This will automate tasks such as exception handling, intelligent routing and SLA or cutoff breach prevention, moving institutions closer to zero-touch payment processing.

We are also expanding self-sufficiency through VolPay Studio, our low-code toolkit. This gives banks greater flexibility to configure and build capabilities themselves, accelerating deployments and reducing complexity.

Another priority is enabling proactive operations. By combining real-time insights with explainable intelligence, institutions can identify and resolve issues before they impact operations.

We are also supporting future-ready payment rails. This includes enabling integration with alternative payment networks, including stablecoins, while maintaining the control, orchestration and compliance required in a bank-grade environment.

The Future Of AI And Stablecoins In Payments

Lad also highlighted AI and stablecoins as two emerging technologies that could reshape payment operations:

AI and stablecoins are two topics I am particularly excited about. Both are generating a lot of attention across the payments industry, but we are now starting to move beyond the hype and focus on practical applications.

AI has the potential to make payment operations more intelligent and efficient, while stablecoins could play an increasingly important role in areas such as cross-border payments and settlement.

I think both technologies will have a significant influence on the future of payments, which is why they are such exciting areas to watch.
